Many people have heard of yoga but yet there is still a confusion as what yoga really is. A common misconception is that yoga is a mystical form of exercise which you contort the body into a series of strange positions. Many people thought is a strange ritual and torturing workouts. None of these are true. Yoga is a simple and gentle activity suitable for everyone. The practice of yoga is not a religion. The early yogis spent their lives living in forests or caves and observing all the living things - the animals, the plants and the trees. They dedicated their lives searching for the answer to the question, "How do things in nature live healthfully and actively?" Using their bodies they imitated, practiced and followed the kinds of movement and exercise of nature, the trees, animals and plants. They name the postures (asana) after animals, trees and vines. Some of the asana are the snake, fish, eagle, tree and vine postures. These early yogis found that after regularly following and imitating the movements of the various animals, they began to feel strong and wonderful. With more practice their bodies and minds became even more strong.

The yoga postures or asanas exercise every part of the body, stretching and toning the muscles and joints, the spine and the entire skeletal system. Yoga is a gentle exercise that everyone can practice. And they work not only on the body's frame but on the internal organs, glands and nerves, keeping all systems healthy. The physical postures (asanas) work gently to increase flexibility, strengthen the muscles and tone all body systems. The breathing exercise known as pranayama revitalize the body and help to control the mind, leaving you feeling calm and refreshed. The meditation (dhyana) gives quietness to the whole being. It brings personal refuge from internal and external stresses. Many people are drawn to yoga as a way to keep their bodies fit and supple. Others seek relief for specific complaint, like tension or backache.

In the modern world life is much faster paced than ever before. Yoga helps to re-connect the fragments and bring stillness to personal existence.  To understand what yoga is all about you need to experience it for yourself. At first glance it seems to be a series of strange physical postures which keep the body lean and flexible. But in time anyone who continues with regular practice becomes aware of change in their approach to life. Through persistent toning and relaxing of the body and the mind you begin to get a glimpse of inner peace.
